In 2000, 164 governments pledged to provide quality basic education for all children, youth and adults by 2015. The pledge was codified in six interrelated goals known as the Education for All goals. Two of these six goals formed part of the Millennium Development Goals—eight goals adopted by United Nations Member States in 2000 that aimed, among other things, to eradicate extreme poverty.
